Resident diagnosed with legal blindness attempts to shave, results in injury.

New Light Nursing Home in Detroit, MI, was cited for inadequate supervision which resulted in injury that occurred on December 12, 2011. A resident diagnosed with legal blindness, alzheimer’s and dementia somehow obtained a razor and attempted to shave his head. When he was discovered he had already cut himself multiple times on the scalp and was bleeding. His MDS (minimum data set) noted that he needed the assistance of two people for hygiene. The Assistant Director of Nurses could not explain how the resident obtained a razor in the first place, or why he was unsupervised during the time of the incident.
