The Department of Justice has become increasingly vigilant in prosecuting those participating in Medicare and Medicaid fraud, which usually occurs in the form of unnecessary prescriptions or unnecessary medical examinations. These stories have become frequent news headlines. Another way that Medicare is taking charge is “Never Events”. A never event is an inexcusable outcome in a health care setting. Medicare no longer reimburses hospitals and other healthcare facilities for never events. Never events include falls with injuries, bedsores, and hospital acquired infections. Medicare no longer reimburses for these conditions because they are preventable.
