Atherosclerosis Part 1:

What is atherosclerosis?

Atherosclerosis is the focal accumulation and hardening of lipid (also referred to as fatty build-up). Atherosclerosis within the arteries of the heart (coronary artery disease) impairs and/or obstructs normal blood flow and results in myocardial ischemia (insufficient blood flow to the heart muscle). Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the single largest killer of men and women in the United States. The American Heart Association and The American College of Cardiology Foundation recommends that all adults undergo assessment of their risk factors for the development of atherosclerosis.
