Many times when a senior citizen falls and sustains serious injury or death, a health care provider will tell the family, “Oh well, old people fall.” This is categorically not true.
While senior citizens are certainly at risk for falling, it is a complete falsehood to suggest that falls in the elderly “just happen” without a reason.
Many times medication errors cause older individuals to become disoriented, weak and susceptible to falls.
Lack of fall prevention procedures in hospitals and nursing homes or failure to adhere to such procedures result in unnecessary falls and very serious injury.
Falls represent a very serious threat to the health and well being of every person and, in particular, senior citizens. Many times people hear the terms “slip and fall” and laugh thinking that someone should have been more careful or less clumsy. This is hardly the case.
