Cupcakes and Cookies in Nursing Homes

Some months ago, we wrote about a case involving an individual who choked to death on popcorn which a family member brought in for staff as a treat.   It should never have been provided to the resident who was on a mechanical soft diet.

Family members frequently bring in treats for caregivers, hoping it will encourage good care and to thank them for their kindness.  Before doing so, it is recommended that you speak to the nurse on duty or administrator to assure that the facility will permit this practice and to make sure that the treats are kept from residents who should not have access to that type of food item.
